A new plan

Callie is feeling much better today, but yesterday’s sudden and acute sickness has changed our expectations and our plan of care for Callie.

This afternoon she got a PICC (peripherally inserted central catheter) placed in her right arm. It will allow her to receive medicine and nutrients without the instability of a traditional IV line.

With the PICC in place she should grow stronger. Within a couple of weeks she should be strong enough to get a gastric tube for nutrition.

After the surgery to place the feeding tube, we can start thinking about getting her home. So Callie will be in the hospital for a while.

It’s possible she may seldom need the feeding tube. But the past 10 days have made it clear that there will be times when she needs it. And we believe that having a way to optimize Callie’s nutrition will help her enjoy life more thoroughly.

Unless things change this likely will be our last blog post for at least a few days. Instead of posting each day we’ll now be updating the blog as things change for Callie.

We have no way to thank you all for the support we’re receiving through this blog and in so many other ways. For those who have asked about Callie’s address, you can write to Callie Golden, c/o Duke University Hospital, 2301 Erwin Road, Durham, NC 27710.

I hope that Callie has a great day today and will soon be able to go home. We are praying for her and for all of the family as I am sure that it takes a toll on all of you. Thinking of you!

    Dear Golden Family,

Schvonne let me know about what was going on with Callie this morning. I’m so sorry to hear that she is going through so much. I have no doubt that she is in good hands & you will make the best decisions possible. If I can help in anyway please do not hesitate to let me know. If the boys would like to come to Sibshops this Friday I would be more than happy to take them with me. Take care of yourselves & try to get rest when possible. ((hugs)) Monica

We have been praying for Callie and your family. Glad she got the PICC line and will work toward getting her g-tube. Praying that the nutrients she receives will make her stronger and stronger. She’s gotta get back to those brothers of hers 🙂 Praying for Mommy and Daddy too as I can’t imagine what you’re going through. God is able! He will provide you with strength when you have none. Hope you feel His hands holding you through each day!

We are relieved to see some concrete ways (a plan)that Callie can receive treatment and not be “stuck” so much. Those Duke docs are wonderful…having had our experience 1 1/2 year ago with Natalie, we can say that.
We continue to think about you all and know you,mom and dad, are doing your best with little Callie who is remarkable as well. Hope you can get some rest…real rest soon.
    Love,
    Peggy & Sam
